Product Alert #63
4-Electrode Water Conductivity Instrument (6536C)
Alkaline battery-pack failure
27 August 2003
Problem
The alkaline battery-pack wiring in the 6536C 4-Electrode Water Conductivity Instrument can be pinched by the battery-tray resulting in catastrophic failure of the battery-pack and enclosure. Tightening the waterproof lid may result in a short on pinched battery-pack leads.
Pressure and heat buildup inside the sealed enclosure can result in a explosive failure of the enclosure. This failure can manifest some time after a battery-pack installation, and is accelerated by vibration.
This affects Model 6536C instruments shipped between August 2000 and August 2003, and with serial numbers 00451 - 00710.
Correction
Replace the battery-tray with a modified 6536C internal battery-tray available from your local Unidata Office or re-seller (Model: HDWE - 6536 BAT PLT ). Modified battery-trays should be installed as soon as possible, and the old trays discarded. Until the defective tray is replaced, care must be taken to ensure the battery leads are not pinched by the tray during re-assembly.
Unidata will ship replacement battery trays to all registered users during September 2003.
Alternativly, return the product to your nearest Unidata office, where a new battery tray will be fitted at our cost.
Product shipped from the factory after August 2003 shall be fitted with the new modified battery tray.
Please Note
The unit will operate normally with no risk of failure or explosion if care is taken not to pinch the battery leads on re-assembly.
