Product Alert #53
Starlog Version 3 Software
Running on Microsoft Windows 2000
23 June 2000
Problem
Unidata have performed some compatability tests with Starlog Version 3 software and Microsoft Windows 2000. Starlog Version 3 will run with some minor issues. The following summarises our test results. If you want to have additional tests OR you have find additional issues please let us know. We caution you that there are multiple 'types' of Windows 2000 and the following may not be valid on other installations.
Results
Based on Starlog version 3 running on Windows 2000 Professional Corporate Edition (5.00.2195) installed on a Toshiba 2650XDVD/60 laptop using FAT32 file system (not NTFS) the software successfully tested for:
- Programming a 6004B datalogger.
- Running the 'test' mode (FTU) screen.
- Unloading data from the datalogger.
- Printing the unloaded data to screen.
- Printing the unloaded data to a file.
- Converting the unloaded data to a lotus file.
- Generating new schemes.
- Modifying existing schemes.
Known Faults
The following problems were noted:
- Plotting to the screen does not work. If a user does this they must press ctrl-alt-delete and then halt the Starlog task (i.e. it is a fatal error to Starlog but not Windows 2000).
- Running Starlog in full screen mode (i.e. not in a window) does not work – it will work in a window (which is the default in Windows 2000).
- The mouse occasionally will not drive the Starlog system. To fix this right click on the Starlog Icon and set the mouse mode in the 'Miscellaneous' settings area to Exclusive mode.
Outstanding Issues
There may be additional problems running Starlog on a Windows 2000 installation that uses the NTFS file system.
Corrections
There is no current solution available for the known problems running Starlog Version 3 with Windows 2000. There are workarounds for the plotting problem (i.e. set up a report to print the data to a file and then use Excel or a similar speadsheet program to generate a graph).
