Model 6004-3 Memory Card Starlogger
Recharge Memory Cards Are Not Charged
27 October 1999
Problem
Recharge memory cards – memory cards with a built-in rechargeable battery instead of a removeable lithium button cell – are not charged by the data logger. There are several reasons for this:
- The logger is typically switched on for less than 100ms per scan – this is not long enough for any sort of useful charging to take place.
- Even when the logger is switched on for a scan, the memory card hardware will only be switched on when there is data to be logged to the memory card – only every log interval.
This means that the memory card is only charged for about 100ms once per log interval – nowhere near enough to recharge the card.
In this situation it appears that recharge cards will last for no more than about 3 months. Memory cards that use lithium batteries will last about 3 years.
Correction
There is no solution to this problem, other than to swap the recharge card in the logger with a fully charged card every 2-3 months, or to use lithium battery backed-up memory cards.
