Product Alert #30

STARLOG Ultrasonic Doppler - Model 6526B - Serial# 451 to 550

Faulty Ultrasonic Transmit Transducer

12 April 1996

Problem

About 15 STARFLOW Instruments, with serial numbers in the range 451 to 550 (probably around No. 500), have their Transmit Transducer incorrectly wired. The righthand stainless steel transducer (viewed from the front) is not connected to ground.

Symptom

The stainless steel transducer discolours and corrodes, eventually causing the transducer to fail. Rapid corrosion will occur if the unit is in salt water.

To determine if the STARFLOW is incorrectly wired, check for continuity between the cable ground (centre pin of the plug) and the transducer. Both receive (lefthand) and transmit (righthand) should be connected to ground.

Correction

Please contact your UNIDATA office to arrange the return of any faulty unit for repair.

Note: If corrosion has begun, the faulty transducer must be replaced, otherwise, the transducer can be re-wired.
