Model: 7400K Technical Specs | Order Info

The Type K Welded Tip Thermocouple is a base metal system using nickel alloys. These probes are ideal for measuring high temperatures. Typical applications are: vehicle/locomotive exhaust and engine temperatures, oil heaters and temperatures of hot water pipes.

Model 7400K is a low-cost probe made from thermocouple extension wire. The two solid conductors are welded at the hot junction point. The wires are glass fibre insulated. The colour coding is in accordance with BS1843. Use Model 7400K Thermocouple Mounting Tape to mount and insulate the junction.

As many as 16 Thermocouples directly connect to a MACRO Data Logger, making this a low cost temperature recording system. Alternatively, by using the 6110A Thermocouple Amplifier or 6142A Universal Amplifier Module per channel, thermocouples can be connected to a STARLOGGER. This is an economical solution if one or two thermocouples are required.

Operating Temperature: -50°C to 480°C
Positive arm: Nickel/Chromium brown/white
Negative arm: Nickel/Aluminium blue/white
Wire conductor: solid, 0.3mm diameter each
Cable: extension wire, Type K, 5 metres supplied
Size: 1.6mm diameter

Thermocouple Temperature Probes

Operation Principle

The basic principle of the thermocouple is the thermoelectric voltage produced at the junction of two dissimilar metals. The voltage generated is proportional to the temperature of the junction. Connecting the measurement junction to a Data Logger introduces two further junctions at the connection point, i.e. the field termination strip. The voltage measured therefore is the differential between the measurement junction and the connection points (reference junction). If all junctions are at the same temperature the output voltage is zero.

Reference Junction Compensation

One of the recommeneded compensation methods is to employ an isothermal enclosure, e.g., Model 6701A/B, where the reference junction temperature drifts slowly with changes in ambient temperature. The enclosure temperature is monitored via the Data Logger's internal temperature channel. The actual temperature at the measurement junction is calculated by the STARLOG Software Package.

This high performance tape is backed by a silicone thermosetting adhesive which will not carbonise at high temperatures. The tape is specifically designed for high temperature exposure and therefore ideally suited for mounting thermocouples. It also provides electrical isolation of the hot junction. Use with Model 7400K Welded Tip Thermocouple Temperature Probe.

Range: -20°C to 310°C
Material: polymide
Size: 12mm W, 33m roll
