To ensure STARLOG’s complete, self-contained operation in the field, power for STARLOG Data Loggers and some STARLOG instruments is supplied by integral battery packs. Two different types of battery are available for STARLOGGER, PDL, MACRO, and Starlog PROLOGGER data loggers – Alkaline and Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad). Only a NiCad Battery Pack is rechargable.

This table shows how life expectancy is affected by the Logger Scan Rate.

All Data Loggers can be supported by 12V DC external power. We recommend that you also use an internal battery pack (Alkaline type) as a backup battery in the event of power failure.

The most universal solar panel/battery combination uses the:

• Model 6904C Solar Panel 7W
• Model 6907C Sealed Lead Acid Battery (12Ah)

This may be used for externally powering all data loggers, STARFLOW, conductivity instruments and zero power modems. It can also recharge a logger’s NiCad pack.

In an installation with a prolonged period (more than 10 consecutive days) without sunlight we recommend the following:

• Model 6904D Solar Panel (12W)
• Two Model 6907C Sealed Lead Acid Batteries (24Ah)

This system will also operate a cellular phone site for up to 5 “sunless” days.

Remember not to use a NiCad battery if an external 12V battery is being used because the internal NiCad will discharge the external battery during the night.
